Israel Adesanya acknowledges that his title fight vs. Yoel Romero was a snoozer.
Adesanya retained his middleweight title by outpointing Romero in a lackluster affair at UFC 248 in March 2020. Only 88 total strikes were landed by both fighters combined over five rounds.
"The Stylebender" brought up the fight when comparing UFC 332's Anthony Wint to Romero. He explained how while both himself and Romero are knockout artists, they paid each other too much respect.
"I had one of the most exciting fights in the history of the planet (vs. Kelvin Gastelum) that's inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, but I also had one of the most boring fights in the history of the company alongside Yoel Romero," Adesanya said on his YouTube channel. "We're both dangerous
men. When he hit me with that zinger, I seen four in front of me, and I thought, 'OK, he’s going to come in for the kill.'
"So whoever comes, if I saw four of them. Then it would have been four, then I'd have to pick which one – but he didn't. He just played the game, and then, yeah – it was a boring fight. But he’s a dangerous man. There's a reason he didn't want to come close and there's a reason I didn't want to risk again getting hit by that zinger. So yeah – shout out to him."
Romero is still proving to be dangerous at the age of 49. He lost a BKFC fight to Darren Till this past Saturday at AO Arena in Manchester, England, but he managed to cut and drop the Brit.
