It's been a long time coming for Sean Woodson.
At UFC Fight Night 286 on Saturday, Woodson (13-2-1 MMA, 7-2-1 UFC) makes his long-awaited return as he battles Jack Jenkins in an on-paper barnburner at Shanghai Indoor Stadium in Shanghai, China. Though it turned out to be the reality, the gap between appearances was not in his plans.
"I was going to take six months just to heal up some nagging injuries or whatever, because I'd fought three times in 2024 and then that one time in 2025," Woodson recently told MMA Junkie. "That was four times relatively close together for me, for what I'm used to, and really just the weight cuts and whatnot. So I'd already planned on, after those weight cuts back-to-back, I was going to give it like six months. Then
after the six months, I was trying to get a fight, and it just took this whole time. I got offered a fight back in October against Kyle Nelson in Canada, but that was on like four weeks' total notice. I had like three weeks to cut weight, and I was just too heavy at the time. I just couldn't do it. But outside of that, especially after that happened in October, and they kind of caught me slipping with that one, I made it a point for them not to catch me slipping again. I jumped on my routine, stayed consistent and been dialed in and disciplined ever since."
Layoffs for a fighter looking to be active aren't ideal. However, the circumstances of the bad taste in his mouth made him all the more eager to get back in there quickly. Woodson most recently competed at UFC 314 in April 2025 and was finished by Dan Ige.
The TKO sequence frustrated some viewers. While Woodson was hurt, he appeared to be rising to his feet the moment referee Andrew Glenn stepped in to call off the fight. What's done is done, however. Woodson said he's grown stronger from it.
"I was just really hard on myself, because I feel like I lost to myself and not to Ige," Woodson said. "I don't feel like he was the better fighter. I feel like it was more of me being hesitant and gun shy, just in my own head. But at the same time, I felt what I felt in there, and I know Ige. He's one of the top dogs. He's been in there with pretty much everybody. I had a lot of stuff outside of the cage going on that camp. I don't even want go into all that, because I'm sure we all deal with that during fight camps, dealing with regular life or whatever. But even at that, even not at my best, it still went to the third round, me d*cking around, bullsh*tting, and then he finally landed one to do some damage.
"Even though it didn't go my way, it let me know where I stand, what I can do, what I'm capable of. I'm just excited to get back in there with another exciting fighter and show the real me. I feel like that fight wasn't a good representation of myself, and I'm detached from the result of this one, win, lose, or draw, I'm just excited to go in there and put forward a proper representation of myself."
Woodson, 32, thinks a win over the always-exciting Australian Jenkins (14-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) should regain the divisional ground he lost with the Ige defeat. With an impressive showing, Woodson thinks a ranked matchup will be earned.
"This time off, there are blessings and positive things you can take from anything, even if at the time it feels like a bad thing," Woodson said. "The whole waiting, it being so long since I fought, it definitely has me itching. It's a different urge than I had before to get back in there. As the fight gets closer, before I'd call it more nerves, jitters, but now it feels more like excitement. I've missed it so much, and I'm excited to get back in there, see the octagon, feel the octagon, be under those lights, and just have a guy in front of me to compete with."
"... Prior to this, I was on a seven-fight unbeaten streak, so I'm just looking forward to going out here, reminding people who I am, getting another crack at that top 15, doing right by it this time, and building momentum, keep building momentum."
