T.J. Dillashaw wanted to see more fight out of Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330.
Machado Garry (17-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) lost a competitive unanimous decision to UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev (29-1 MMA, 18-1 UFC) last Saturday at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
One of the judges had the fight two rounds a piece heading into Round 5, but Makhachev ultimately got Machado Garry down and held him there to secure the win. Dillashaw put the blame on Machado Garry's corner.
"I feel like Ian Garry was fighting to survive and not to win," Dillashaw said on the JAXXON PODCAST. "He was just happy with not getting smothered, getting taken down and getting embarrassed. He just wanted to survive when he should have had more offense. He should have had more volume,
getting outside the shoulders, not standing in front of the guy, using his range. So much he could have done differently there.
"And then talking about the corner and game plan, when I watched the fight and they would show the corner of Ian Garry's, none of them were in sync. They were all trying to talk at the same f*cking time. The guy with the ponytail (Jason Strout) and then Demian Maia, they're speaking Portuguese, they're speaking English, all of them are talking at the same time. I was like, 'Yo, shut the f*ck up.' Let one person go in there."
Dillashaw wanted to see Machado Garry put more into his combinations. He criticized him for being overly respectful during the fight with his friendly gestures towards Makhachev.
"The game plan here should have been Ian Garry getting outside the shoulders, staying outside that front foot, using your sprint crosses, bringing a head kick behind it, continuing to kick the body," Dillashaw said. "Especially in Rounds 3, 4 and 5 when Islam was starting to slow down because he defended some of his shots, put some f*cking volume together. But instead, you want to come out, you want to hug him, you want to kiss him, tell him how good he is."
Dillashaw concluded by saying it's not a lack of skill that lost Machado Garry the fight.
"I don't think it's the skill set. I think it's the mindset," Dillashaw said. "I think he's skillful enough. You've got to have that killer instinct. You've got to have that 'F*ck you' attitude. 'I got out of a takedown, I scrambled out, I got all that effort out, and now I'm going to f*cking light you up,' rather than space, relax."
