Robert Whittaker is not a fan of the BMF title.
Since the BMF title was created in 2019, Jorge Masvidal, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira have held the belt. Oliveira dominated Holloway to capture the BMF title at UFC 326 in March.
Whittaker explains which direction he would have preferred to see the UFC take instead of creating a BMF title.
"Firstly, BMF title, I still don't know," Whittaker said on his "MMArcade Podcast." "I am happy for the fighters that it's around because I think they get championship-level money. It's like an extra bonus, an extra incentive to earn cash and earn it that way, but I don't understand it.
"Or no, I just don't fully agree with it. Secondly, why don't we just have more titles like boxing? I don't know
the answer to it. Or maybe they're just superfights because they're main events. We don't really need – even the BMF sounds tacky a little bit, you know what I mean?"
Oliveira (37-11 MMA, 25-11 UFC) makes his first BMF title defense when he takes on Diego Lopes (28-8 MMA, 7-3 UFC) in the UFC 335 main event on Dec. 12 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (Paramount+).
