Robert Whittaker backs Alexander Volkanovski in his pursuit of a second UFC belt.
Volkanovski (29-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC) set his eyes on a superfight with lightweight champion Justin Gaethje (28-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) after he retained his featherweight title with a second-round TKO of Movsar Evloev Saturday at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi.
Volkanovski pitched a double retirement idea
against Gaethje and Whittaker supports his suggestion."I want to see him fight Gaethje," Whittaker said of Volkanovski on his MMArcade Podcast. "I want to see him fight Gaethje because, dude, he beats Gaethje. He beats him, man – 100 percent, he does. And that is such a cool thing that both guys leave it all out there, both guys leave gloves out there, both guys cement legacies. That's
mad. That's a really cool end of the rainbow sort of situation."
The odds for Volkanovski vs. Evloev were a pick'em, with many doubting the 38-year-old champion because of his age. With wins over Evloev, Jose Aldo, Diego Lopes twice and Max Holloway three times, Whittaker is surprised to see Volkanovski continuously get underestimated.
"I think everyone in that division doesn't realize how good Volk is until he's standing across from them," Whittaker said. "That's the truth of it. We've seen a lot of good guys riding a lot of momentum going into those fights – people like Max Holloway standing opposite side him and not realizing how good Volk is. Let's be honest: The world didn't realize how good he is until he keeps repeatedly doing the same thing over and over and over, and working people."
