The BMF title will be on the line for the sixth time in history in the UFC 335, and one lightweight legend thinks the matchup lives up to the unique billing of the belt.
Former UFC and Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez supports the newly announced Dec. 12 headliner at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (Paramount+) where reigning BMF titleholder Charles Oliveira will look to defend against Diego Lopes.
Some questioned if the BMF would be taken out of circulation after Oliveira (37-11 MMA, 25-11 UFC) took it from Max Holloway in underwhelming fashion at UFC 326 in March. That's not the case, and Alvarez sees the showdown with Lopes (28-8 MMA, 7-3 UFC) as one of that should muster a reminder of what it was made for.
"Hell yeah," Alvarez told MMA Junkie of
the UFC 335 main event. "That's a tornado and a volcano. What a fight. I'd love to see that for a main event. That's BMF-worthy for sure. Even both of their jiu-jitsu is unbelievable, so even seeing both of them on the ground would be great. Standing up would be great. I think that's going to be a full mixed martial arts fight. That's going to go everywhere we want it to go."
There was a time where Alvarez would've been the perfect candidate to compete for the BMF championship, but it wasn't created until after he'd already exited the promotion.
The BMF title debuted in 2019 when Jorge Masvidal fought and defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 244. Other BMF matchups since include: Justin Gaethje def. Dustin Poirier at UFC 291, Max Holloway def. Gaethje at UFC 300, Holloway def. Dustin Poirier at UFC 318 and Oliveira def. Holloway at UFC 326.
