The Green Bay Packers have their new No. 3 quarterback: Kedon Slovis, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals. On Tuesday, the Packers signed Slovis to the practice squad to serve as the third quarterback behind starter Jordan Love and veteran backup Tyrod Taylor.
Who is Slovis? An undrafted free agent out of BYU, Slovis entered the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts in 2024, spent the 2024 season on the practice squad of the Houston Texans and then joined the Cardinals in 2025. He spent the final 12 weeks of the regular season on Arizona's 53-man roster and appeared in one regular season game for the Cardinals last season, but he was released at final roster cutdowns on Sunday and cleared waivers on Monday.

The Packers just saw him up close
Slovis played the majority of the preseason finale for the Cardinals at Lambeau Field. He completed 21 of 35 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown, often creating big plays against Green Bay's reserve defense, but he also threw two interceptions, including a final interception to Arron Mosby that set up the Packers' game-winning touchdown drive. Slovis was hit on both of his interceptions thrown.
With Slovis under center, the Cardinals went on scoring drives of 76 yards, 56 yards, 56 yards, 27 yards and 68 yards against the Packers.
"Watching him over the course of the preseason, he's a natural thrower, he's really talented," LaFleur said. "We'll get him in here and see how he does."

In the Hall of Fame Game to open the preseason, Slovis completed 9 of 10 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown. His 1-yard touchdown late in the game capped off a 62-yard scoring drive and gave the Cardinals a 30-27 lead. A week later, Slovis completed 7 of 9 passes for 75 yards against the Raiders, but he was only 2-of-7 passing for 30 yards against the Cowboys.
Packers connection
Who was Slovis' quarterback coach and offensive coordinator during high school in Arizona? Former Packers quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner. Both the Deseret News and The Athletic highlighted Warner's impact on Slovis during his developmental high school years in Scottsdale.
And who was Slovis' quarterback coach and offensive coordinator at USC between 2019 and 2021? Former Packers quarterback Graham Harrell, who spent a couple of seasons backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.
Bright start, fading finish in college
Slovis completed 71.2 percent of his passes, averaged 8.9 yards per attempt and threw 30 touchdown passes to only nine interceptions during his standout freshman season at USC in 2019, but he chased that level of success the rest of his collegiate career, which saw him play at three different schools over five seasons. After the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Slovis struggled as a junior in 2021, throwing 11 touchdown passes and eight interceptions as USC finished 4-8. He transferred to Pitt in 2022, threw 10 touchdown passes and nine interceptions during another disappointing season, and then transferred a final time to BYU. Slovis got hurt midway through his final season in 2023 and finished with only eight appearances. After his dazzling 2019 season, Slovis saw his completion percentage and quarterback rating fall during each of his subsequent seasons. His stardom came on fast but faded year over year.
Coming from a similar offense and style
Slovis is coming from Mike LaFleur's offense in Arizona and should have a relatively smooth transition to a new offense in Green Bay, especially after working directly under offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and quarterbacks coach Matt Schaub. While Slovis will need time to digest the Packers scheme, he'll be further ahead than most newcomers.
"I think that helps a little bit, for sure. There's some similarity, some carryover. Just how we train the guys," LaFleur said Tuesday. "With (Nathaniel) Hackett and Matt Schaub there, two guys I've been around in the past, so we'll just see how he does when he gets in here."
Ideally, the Packers wouldn't need Slovis at any point in the near future. The hope will be developing Slovis on the practice squad over the 2026 regular season, potentially providing a QB2 option come 2027.

Elite athlete
Slovis (6-2, 224) tested well during the 2024 pre-draft process, earning a 9.74 Relative Athletic Score. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.55 seconds, showcasing elite speed. He also posted an impressive 1.57-second 10-yard split. His broad jump was 9-10. The Packers saw some of his athletic ability in the preseason finale when Slovis escaped the pocket and scrambled for nine yards. While not a Malik Willis-like runner, Slovis is far from a statue in the pocket.
