The Green Bay Packers completed a trio of trades during roster cutdown day on Sunday, using the excess at quarterback to add a 2028 draft pick and using other 2028 picks to add much-needed roster help at running back and tight end.
The end result, based on compensation, was trading away one player (quarterback Kyle McCord) and two draft picks while acquiring two players (running back Kaleb Johnson and tight end Mark Redman) and one draft pick.

The Packers turned McCord, who signed a futures deal in January, into a future Day 3 draft pick after he impressed as a passer throughout the preseason. With Jordan Love and
Tyrod Taylor locked in, the Packers could afford to be flexible with the third quarterback spot, and Miami's need for a backup behind Malik Willis created an ideal trade situation. The Packers got a draft pick for a player who wasn't making the roster, while the Dolphins skipped the line to get McCord.
Packers trade for Steelers RB Kaleb Johnson

On the same day the NFL placed Josh Jacobs on the Commissioner's Exemption List, the Packers swung a deal with the Steelers for Johnson, a 2025 third-round pick who fell out of favor in Pittsburgh. The former Iowa star will provide the Packers with a third running back alongside MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks while Jacobs is out, and the cost wasn't prohibitive, especially considering Green Bay got a 2028 sixth-round pick from the Dolphins for McCord. The sixth-round pick going to Pittsburgh will be Green Bay's original pick, not Miami's.

The Packers have been talking about needing another "Y" tight end since the end of the 2026 draft. When Drake Dabney, Messiah Swinson and the other tight ends behind Tucker Kraft faltered this summer, the Packers finalized a deal with the Rams for Redman, a classic "Y" tight end who can play inline and block in the run game. In Jonnu Smith and Redman, the Packers have drastically reshaped the tight end room. Smith provides pass-catching versatility, while Redman gives the Packers another capable blocker behind Kraft. A future seventh-round pick is nothing for a player who can help the Packers right now.
