There is a new pick-six king in NFL history. On "Sunday Night Football" in Week 3, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford threw an interception returned for a touchdown in the second half of a loss to the Denver Broncos, breaking the career record once set by former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.
Favre, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, set the regular season record at 32. Stafford, a likely Hall of Famer, broke the record with his 33rd career pick-six on Sunday night.
Favre's last career pick-six came on Dec. 5, 2010 while with the Minnesota Vikings. He eclipsed Dan Marino's previous record of 28 while with the New York Jets in 2008.
While with the Packers, Favre threw three pick-sixes in 1993, 1997, 1998 and 2005 and two pick-sixes in 1999,
2001, 2003 and 2006. Of his 16 seasons in Green Bay, Favre threw at least one pick-six during 12 different years. He also set a playoff record by throwing three pick-sixes against the St. Louis Rams during the 2001 postseason.
Famously, Favre's first NFL pass attempt while with the Atlanta Falcons was intercepted and returned for a touchdown in 1991.
If counting the playoffs, Favre still holds the record -- he threw four pick-sixes in the postseason and has an NFL record 36 pick-sixes overall.
The NFL record for pick-sixes thrown in a single season is held by Jameis Winston, who threw seven in 2019.
One of Favre's interception records will likely never be broken. Favre threw an NFL record 336 interceptions overall, and no active player has thrown more than 200 (Stafford, who is almost 39 years old). There is simply not active player with a legitimate chance of challenging Favre's record.
