The Green Bay Packers erased a 17-7 deficit in the fourth quarter, got a game-winning field goal in overtime from rookie Trey Smack and snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the New York Jets by a 20-17 final from MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
The Packers trailed 17-7 after MarShawn Lloyd fumbled the ball away and the Jets kicked a field goal to go up 10 points with 11:04 left. An 0-2 start loomed, but a 73-yard touchdown drive and a 63-yard punt return setting up the game-tying field goal got the Packers to overtime, and a defensive stop and a few big plays from Jordan Love and the passing game set up Smack's 26-yard field goal to win the game.
The win is the Packers' first since Dec. 7 of last year.
Flipping the script, the Packers engineered
a comeback of their own, outscoring the Jets 13-0 over the final 16 minutes of game time.
Green Bay finished with only 199 total yards. The Packers were officially penalized 14 times for 133 yards. They went 1-for-9 on third down and lost the turnover battle, 1-0. But a few big plays down the stretch ignited a sleepwalking team.
Matthew Golden caught an 18-yard pass on third down (the team's only conversion on third down) and drew a 38-yard penalty on the scoring drive, which Christian Watson finished with a 3-yard touchdown catch. Later, Moore ripped off a long punt return, setting up the game-tying field goal, and Lukas Van Ness got the game to overtime with a fourth down stop near midfield.
In overtime, sacks split by Brandon Cisse/Barryn Sorrell and Van Ness/Dani Dennis-Sutton forced a punt, and Love hit two passes for 29 yards to set up the field goal.
The Packers have a short week coming up and the home opener on Thursday night against the 0-2 Atlanta Falcons. Can Matt LaFleur's team recover from an overtime road game and beat the Falcons to get to 2-1 in a few days?
