The Green Bay Packers are signing a pair of former UFL defensive backs to address the mounting injury concerns at safety during training camp.
According to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, the Packers will sign safety Trey Dean III, who spent time with the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns
since going undrafted in 2023. He played for the Louisville Kings and St. Louis Battlehawks this season.According to James Larsen of PFN, the Packers will also sign safety Tra Fluellen, who starred with the Dallas Renegades this season. He went undrafted in 2024 and previously spent time with the New Orleans Saints.
With a full roster previously, the Packers will need to make two corresponding roster moves to fit Dean and Fluellen.
The Packers
are dealing with a host of injuries at safety. Javon Bullard missed practice on Monday with a bone bruise on his foot, and the Packers had to waive injured safety Johnathan Baldwin because of a knee injury on Sunday. The only healthy safety types on the roster currently are Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams, Kitan Oladapo, Mark Perry and rookie Murvin Kenion. Oladapo has played the slot with Bullard injured and Baldwin waived.
The Packers will likely need Dean and Fluellen on the field and practicing with the team on Tuesday, the last public practice before Matt LaFleur's team goes to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers in the preseason opener on Thursday night.
