The Green Bay Packers hosted a tryout for a pair of punters on Thursday. According to the league's transaction report, the Packers had a tryout for punters James Rendell and Jack Stonehouse.
It's currently unknown if the Packers are simply updating their board of available players at punter, or if punter Daniel Whelan is dealing with something midweek. The Packers do not have a backup punter on the practice squad, but Whelan was not added to the injury report on Thursday.
Rendell, an international player from Australia, went undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2026. He averaged 44.6 yards per punt, placed 13 punts inside the 20-yard line and finished with four punts of 50 or more yards in 2025. Over two seasons at Notre Dame, Rendell placed 37 punts inside the 20-yard line.
He is the son of Matt Rendell, a famous Australian Football League player.
Stonehouse, the son of former NFL punter John Stonehouse, went undrafted out of Syracuse in 2026. The two-time All-ACC pick spent three months with the Houston Texans -- from May 8 to Aug. 8 -- during the offseason. Stonehouse averaged 45.9 yards per punt, had 58 career punts of at least 50 yards and 58 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. He is Syracuse's career net punting average record holder at 45.8. Stonehouse was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine.
The Packers could consider Rendell as a replacement for kicker Lenny Kreig as the team's international exemption player on the practice squad.
