The Green Bay Packers made four roster moves on Tuesday, using the two additions to address growing depth concerns due to injuries at safety. The Packers signed safeties Trey Dean and Tra Fluellen, who were both able to practice with the team on Tuesday, and released offensive lineman Karsen Barnhart and tight end Drew Biber.
Dean (6-2, 201) went undrafted out of Florida in 2023. He's spent time with the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns at the NFL level but has never appeared in a regular season game. He also played for the DC Defenders, Louisville Kings and St. Louis Battlehawks of the UFL.
Fluellen (6-0, 212) went undrafted out of Middle Tennessee State in 2024. He was with the New Orleans Saints in 2024 and 2025 and later
played for the Dallas Renegades of the UFL in 2026.
Injuries at safety, specifically to Javon Bullard (who has missed back-to-back practices) and Johnathan Baldwin (who was waived injured), created the need at safety. Both Dean and Fluellen will be expected to play snaps when the Packers open the preseason on Thursday night in Pittsburgh. The two will join starters Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams and backups Kitan Oladapo, Mark Perry and rookie Murvin Kenion III as the only healthy safeties on the roster currently.
While the top four at safety -- McKinney, Williams, Bullard and Oladapo -- are all but set in stone, a 53-man roster spot is probably available behind the four, especially considering Bullard plays primarily in the slot. Can Dean or Fluellen show enough over the next few weeks to earn a spot?
The Packers signed Barnhart to the practice squad in December of last year and retained him on the offseason roster with a futures deal in January. Biber, a Wisconsin native, was added to the roster during training camp when injuries hit at tight end. The Packers are fairly deep along the offensive line, making Barnhart expendable. At tight end, Biber was the odd man out after the team added McCallan Castles and welcomed international player Thomas Yassmin to the mix over the last week.
