Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur were able to provide a few injury updates before Thursday's practice. Tight end Luke Musgrave remains in a waiting period, running back Chris Brooks could be back soon, cornerback Domani Jackson could get into 11-on-11 work next week and cornerback Carrington Valentine is out for the rest of the week.
Some injury updates from Thursday:
TE Luke Musgrave (neck)
Update: "There's a waiting time that we have to go through, so it's not like something that we're checking on every day. It's something where we have to get through a certain time before we can look at that and see where we're at. We got a little time to go here." -- GM Brian Gutekunst
Musgrave suffered the injury during the offseason workout
program. The team still doesn't have a good feel for the long-term outlook of the injury. Musgrave is entering a contract year, and the Packers are really lacking depth behind Tucker Kraft at tight end.
RB Chris Brooks (hamstring)
Update: "Chris Brooks is a guy that I never worry about. He is a maniac when it comes to wanting to get in the weight room, to run, to do anything when it comes to training. Hopefully, we'll see him sooner than later." -- coach Matt LaFleur
Brooks injured himself while training before the open of camp. He signed a two-year deal to return to the Packers this offseason and will eventually assume his spot as one of the top backups behind Josh Jacobs once he's healthy again, but MarShawn Lloyd is healthy and making noise to start camp. LaFleur said Damien Martinez and Pierre Strong Jr. are getting more reps with Brooks out.
CB Domani Jackson (undisclosed)
Update: "Hopefully after Family Night we can start giving him more. Here's a younger player who is missing some valuable time, for sure." -- coach Matt LaFleur
Jackson, a sixth-round pick, has missed the offseason workout program and the start of training camp with an injury. Getting him on the field in 11-on-11 periods after Family Night will provide an opportunity for Jackson to get back into the mix at corner, but can he make up for time lost?
CB Carrington Valentine (hamstring)
Update: "He won't practice this week at all. Not long-term, but as far as, I can't give you a timeline for when he'll be back. It's a shame, because I think he was playing really good football." -- coach Matt LaFleur
Valentine's absence provides extra intrigue to the cornerback competition, where top draft pick Brandon Cisse and newcomer Benjamin St-Juste are in the mix to start. With Family Night and the preseason opener nearing, Cisse and St-Juste will get opportunities to run with the first-team defense in big spots.
