After going through a heated competition during training camp, Green Bay Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon emerged as a starter for Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings.
Nixon wasted no time vindicating that decision, recording a tackle for loss and an interception in the first two plays of the game. After playing 65 defensive snaps, he finished with five combined tackles, two quarterback hits, and half a sack.
The always dangerous Justin Jefferson hauled in eight catches for 92 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Nixon was in close coverage for three of those catches, according to Pro Football Focus, surrendering 35 yards.
Matt LaFleur praised Nixon's performance, saying it was one of his most complete games in the five seasons they’ve been together.
“I just love how he competed down in and down out,” LaFleur said Wednesday. “There were some tough, competitive catches made on him, but he was there in coverage in a good position. Sometimes that’s just how life is in the NFL, but I thought he had one of his most complete games, I would say, in my time here.”
LaFleur’s support for Nixon has never wavered, even when the 29-year-old corner felt like he was being “punished” for having to earn a starting spot.
“I love Kei,” LaFleur said on Aug. 18. "He’s been awesome since the day he’s been here. I don’t read any of that stuff, so…I’m not going to micromanage what everybody says. If he feels a certain type of way, it is what it is, but I do think that it’s a benefit to the team to have people that you feel are capable to go in there and play, and we’ll all be better for that. Like I said, whether it’s corner or the offensive line, really every spot, you better come to compete each and every day if you want to be out there.”
Nixon started all 17 games for the Packers last season and finished with a career-high 17 pass breakups.
Nixon looked like a starting corner when he broke up five passes in a Week 2 win over the Commanders and again when he had the game-sealing interception in the end zone on 4th-and-1 with under 30 seconds left to defeat the Chicago Bears in Week 14. However, Nixon’s 12 regular-season penalties ranked first among corners, and he also allowed a team-high seven touchdowns and 570 receiving yards with a 105.2 passer rating.
So while Nixon is off to a good start in 2026, it’s difficult to get excited until he does it consistently.
