The Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots have a lot in common heading into their Week 9 matchup. Both teams got off to disappointing 1-2 starts, but have rebounded to 5-3. Both teams have quarterbacks trying to take the next step and prove they are among the league’s elite, and both defenses are playing extremely well.
So, who has the advantage?
Here are three key matchups that could decide who wins on Sunday in New England:
Packers WRs Christian Watson and Matthew Golden vs. Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez
Watson and Golden are balling out this season, but Sunday will be quite a test for the NFL’s most prolific receiving duo.
Don’t let the zero interceptions fool you. Gonzalez is one of the league’s best corners when it comes to locking guys down. The 2024 first-team All-Pro is allowing just a 55.2% reception rate and a 73.2
passer rating against his coverage this season, according to Pro Football Focus.
Gonzalez also recognizes the challenge of facing Watson and Golden, two receivers who can hurt you in a variety of ways and have already combined for six 100-yard receiving games through eight games.
“I got a lot of respect for both of them,” Gonzalez said of the Packers’ top receivers. “I mean, they can both take the top off. They can both run good routes. Jordan Love does a great job getting the ball to them in space. They can make people miss; they can run a lot of routes. They move them around a lot and get the ball in their hands. So, it’s a fun challenge, and we’re excited for it.”
Packers secondary vs. Patriots QB Drake Maye
Maye was scary good in October. In four games, New England’s quarterback threw for 1,199 yards and 12 touchdowns, with a 67.2 percent completion percentage and a 119.0 passer rating. That productivity earned Maye the AFC Offensive Player of the Month award for the first time in his career.
On the other hand, Maye has been careless with the ball at times this season. He’s thrown eight interceptions, and six of those have come in losses.
Green Bay’s defense ranks second in the league in takeaways, and the pass rush had its best performance of the season in last week’s win over the Carolina Panthers. Pressuring Maye into a bad decision could lead to a game-altering turnover.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur vs. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel
LaFleur was Vrabel’s offensive coordinator in 2018 when the two were together with the Tennessee Titans. Sunday will be their third matchup as head coaches, with the series split at 1-1.
Without a reliable run game, the Packers have turned to a pass-heavy attack. It’s worked in spurts, but it won’t be easy to move the ball or score points against Vrabel’s Patriots. New England ranks in the top 10 in both yards and points allowed per game.
That said, the Packers have two playmaking receivers, and Gonzalez can’t cover both at the same time. Tight end Tucker Kraft has also picked up his play over the last five weeks, averaging 48.8 receiving yards per game while catching three touchdowns.
I give Green Bay’s weapons a slight edge, but LaFleur will need a solid game plan against his former boss’ stingy defense.
