Running back Damon Bankston isn't the only new addition to the Green Bay Packers' practice squad. On Wednesday, the team signed former Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings defensive back Kahlef Hailassie to the practice squad, per Bill Huber of Packers on SI.
In a corresponding roster move, the Packers released rookie safety Murvin Kenion III, who was in Green Bay throughout training camp.
Hailassie, now in his fourth season at the NFL level, has experience playing cornerback, safety and in the slot.
Hailassie, who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2023, played in 10 regular season games with the Browns between the 2023 and 2024 season, and he spent training camp with the Vikings during each of the last two offseasons. He was released
during final roster cutdowns in August.
The Packers will be Hailassie's fifth NFL team, joining the Chiefs, Browns, Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars. Last season, Hailassie spent two months on the 53-man roster of the Jaguars but did not appear in a game.
Not only will Hailassie have some information on the Vikings defense to provide before Week 1 on Sunday, but he's a more experienced and versatile player than Kenion, and the Packers are thin at safety behind Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams, Javon Bullard and Kitan Oladapo.
Per Huber, Hailassie was on the practice field for the Packers on Wednesday. He is wearing No. 34.
