No team in the NFL has been penalized at the rate of the Green Bay Packers through the first two weeks of the 2026 NFL season. Matt LaFleur's team has a real penalty problem to fix early in the year.
After two weeks, the Packers lead the NFL in accepted penalties (26), penalty yards (231), total declined/offsetting penalties (6) and total penalties (32).
The 32 flags thrown on the Packers is a staggering number in two games. The next closest team only has 23 total penalties, including declined/offsetting penalties.
And this is a three-phased problem for the Packers. The offense has been penalized 13 times (11 accepted). The defense has been penalized 15 times (11 accepted). And the special teams has four penalties.
Against the Jets, the Packers
committed 18 total penalties, including 14 accepted penalties for 133 yards. No team had more penalties in Week 2, although the Jets had more penalty yards (156).
Of the 26 accepted penalties, nine have been pre-snap infractions. These are simply focus and concentration penalties, the unacceptable type. Physical and fundamental mistakes are going to happen every week, but coaches lose their mind when players jump offsides and false start.
Seven different players have been penalized at least twice: Keisean Nixon, Lukas Van Ness, Dani Dennis-Sutton, Jordan Morgan, Anthony Belton, Chris McClellan and Javon Bullard.
The Packers have four false start penalties and eight offensive holding penalties, highlighting the early season struggles of the offensive line. The Packers also have five unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and five offsides or neutral zone infraction penalties.
This isn't some isolated issue on offense, defense or special teams, or even a cluster issue with a few players. Everyone is making penalized mistakes, creating a difficult problem to solve moving forward.
A chance to start cleaning up the penalty problems arrives Thursday night in the home opener.
