The Tennessee Titans’ Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets could come down to a handful of individual battles when the two teams meet at noon CST this Sunday.
Both teams enter the opener looking to establish a new identity. Tennessee is beginning its first season under head coach Robert Saleh, who previously coached the Jets, while New York is entering Year 2 of the Aaron Glenn era after going 3-14 last season (same as the Titans).
The Titans are slightly favored at home, while the projected total of 39.5 points suggests a defensive battle. With that in mind, here are three key matchups that could decide the Titans’ Week 1 matchup against the Jets.
Titans QB Cam Ward vs. Jets secondary
The most obvious matchup starts with Tennessee’s second-year quarterback. Cam Ward’s performance
against the Jets’ revamped secondary could determine just how successful the Titans’ offense is in its first game under offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
Ward enters his second NFL season with the benefit of a much deeper group of offensive weapons around him, including newcomers WR Wan’Dale Robinson and rookie WR Carnell Tate. However, the Jets have made changes in their secondary to improve a unit that struggled mightily last season.
New York added veteran safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, among others, to create more stability on the back end after not recording an interception throughout all of 2025. If Ward consistently finds Tennessee’s playmakers and forces the Jets’ secondary to defend the entire field, the Titans could have an opportunity to control the game. However, if New York can confuse Ward, the matchup could quickly swing in the Jets’ favor.
Jeffery Simmons vs. Jets offensive line
The Titans’ biggest advantage could come in the trenches, with Jeffery Simmons playing his first game under Robert Saleh’s system. Tennessee has also surrounded him with several players who fit the defensive identity Saleh wants to establish, including former Jets defensive linemen Jermaine Johnson and John Franklin-Myers.
If Tennessee can generate interior pressure without constantly blitzing against Jets QB Geno Smith, Saleh can devote additional resources to defending Garrett Wilson and the rest of New York’s receiving corps. Simmons’ ability to collapse the pocket and disrupt the run game will be key to forcing Smith to throw when he doesn’t want to.
Titans offensive line vs Jets defensive front
Another battle of the trenches headlines this Week 1 matchup of teams hoping to reverse their recent struggles. The Jets used their second overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft to select edge rusher David Bailey, who expects to get plenty of playing time despite appearing on their depth chart as a backup.
Former Titans nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat will also man the middle under the direction of defensive-minded head coach Aaron Glenn. The Titans have some changes along their offensive line group that allowed 56 sacks (6th most in the NFL) in 2025.
Protecting Cam Ward is key to his success against the Jets' secondary, and this will be the Titans' first true test of improvement since last season.
