The Titans' Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets gives Tennessee an opportunity to start the 2026 NFL season on the right foot. After consecutive 3-14 seasons, expectations aren't high for the Titans from the outside looking in. Various power rankings have placed Tennessee between numbers 26 and 28 in the NFL entering Week 1.
But that's exactly what makes Sunday's matchup interesting, as the Titans don't need to prove they're ready to compete with the NFL's best teams just yet. They just need to show signs that the franchise is finally moving in the right direction.
A win over the Jets would be a significant first step. The Titans started the last two seasons 0-3 and 0-4, respectively. So starting the season 1-0 for the first time since 2020
would be a huge step forward for this young team.
Here are three reasons why Titans fans should feel optimistic they can accomplish that this Sunday.
1. Cam Ward has a much better situation around him
The Titans' biggest reason for optimism starts with their young quarterback. Cam Ward enters year two with a significantly better environment around him after enduring plenty of growing pains as a rookie. The Titans added Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator and surrounded Ward with considerably more weapons, including wide receivers Wan'Dale Robinson and Carnell Tate.
The combination of Ward’s second-year development, Daboll’s offensive experience, and talented receiving core gives Tennessee a reason to believe the offense can look much different than it did in 2025.
2. Robert Saleh has built a defense that should be fun to watch
The second reason for optimism is on the other side of the ball, with new head coach Robert Saleh building the Titans defense in his image. Saleh has brought several familiar players into Tennessee, including former Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson and Broncos interior lineman John Franklin-Myers.
Those additions are designed to give Tennessee a more aggressive and physical defensive front alongside Jeffery Simmons as the centerpiece. If the Titans can consistently create pressure without having to blitz heavily, Saleh can make things difficult for Geno Smith and the Jets’ passing game.
3. Titans have more young talent than their previous record suggests
The final reason for optimism is that the Titans aren’t the same roster that went 3-14 last season. Tennessee has undergone a significant overhaul this offseason under general manager Mike Borgonzi and Saleh.
The organization has added young talent while also bringing in veterans who fit the new coaching staff’s vision. Rookie top-five pick Carnell Tate is expected to play a major role immediately, while rookie first-round pick Keldric Faulk gives Saleh another young defensive piece to develop.
Other young players, including Ward, return specialist/wide receiver Chimere Dike, and left guard Peter Skoronski, headline others who showed potential last season and look to take another leap. If Ward looks more comfortable and Tate looks like a legitimate top-five pick, among other developments, Tennessee could look considerably better than its recent record suggests.
