One of the craziest reports to surface after the Tennessee Titans traded Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears is that New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh bypassed general manager Mike Borgonzi and arrogantly contacted owner Amy Adams Strunk directly to try to facilitate a trade.
Per Dan Benton of Giants Wire, Harbaugh verified these reports during his Week 9 media availability.
"I did, I did. I left a message because you're turning over every stone, going to try everything," Harbaugh said. "I mean, I'll put it out there, man. We're open for any call. Anybody who wants to call us or call anybody, call."
While it is clear to everyone that Harbaugh has the power in New York, with long-time general manager Joe Schoen merely his caddy, Harbaugh handling
business makes sense on some levels, but by other metrics, it screams hubris.
The call has drawn some criticism around the league, and that fell on deaf ears. In fact, Harbaugh shrugs off the criticism, stating:
"We're not part of any secret society oath that says you can only talk to somebody. We're not in that. We didn't get memoed on that. We're not in that agreement," Harbaugh said. "So, like I said, anybody can call us. We won't be adhering to that particular agreement."
Like the unwritten rules in baseball, organizations have good-faith expectations for how things are handled, and this move clearly walks a line. While Harbaugh may not have broken a rule or even sworn an oath to the Illuminati, the decision was in bad taste, and everyone should keep watching Harbaugh for signs of a grander conspiracy. You never know what you might find by diving down a rabbit hole.
