The Tennessee Titans hosted the Houston Texans on Sunday in their first divisional matchup of the season. Both teams entered the game 0-4, so one of them was going to walk away with their first win of the season.
It was an ugly game through all four quarters. Cam Ward struggled to do much of anything, the ground game couldn't get going, and the defense just couldn't keep up at the end of the game after spending so much time on the field.
How this team played today made it really difficult to choose a Player of the Game, but Titans Wire came to a consensus around safety Tony Adams.
Adams started in place of an injured Amani Hooker today, and he was incredibly impactful. He led the defense with nine tackles (two solo), and while he didn't have any
additional stats, he was consistently in the right place at the right time. He played well enough that not having Hooker out there wasn't as detrimental as it could have been.
Terrell Burgess, who stepped in after Kevin Winston Jr. was injured on the opening kickoff, was second in tackles behind Adams and also played very well in Winston's place. He had eight tackles (five solo) and one pass defensed.
In a game like this, no single player truly shined over the rest. Adams gets the nod because of circumstances. He was asked to do things today that he doesn't normally have to do, and he looked at his team and said, "Challenge accepted." He took on everything they asked him to do, faced the challenge head-on, and exceeded expectations.
