The Tennessee Titans were on the road for the first time this week when they faced the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, today. It was a rainy and wet outing on the East Coast, which made it a low-scoring affair.
The Titans' offense struggled to get anything going in the first half, obtaining just one first down and zero points. They looked better in the second half, but Cam Ward threw an interception on what should have been a game-winning touchdown drive.
The defense played well throughout the entire game, allowing the Giants to score only four field goals. The biggest reason for the defensive success is Jeffery Simmons, which is why he is this week's Player of the Game.
Statistically, Simmons recorded 10 tackles
(five solo), one sack, two quarterback hits, and two tackles for a loss. But Simmons' impact goes beyond the stat line. He is a disruptive force on the field, causing opposing offensive linemen to hold on to him for dear life. Those aren't always seen by the officials and called, but there were several offensive holding calls against the Giants today.
Giants quarterback Jameis Winston was under a ton of pressure at home today, and Simmons made him feel every ounce of extra pressure he could muster. He threw for just 118 passing yards. When Simmons wasn't shutting down Winston, he was shutting down Cam Skattebo, closing the gaps and giving him nowhere to run. Even if he wasn't making the tackle, he was the reason someone else could.
The Titans had yet another very real chance to win a game, and once again failed to do so. Next week, they'll face former Titans running back Derrick Henry and the Baltimore Ravens on the road.
