Patience is a word no one in today's climate likes to hear, but it's essential to life. The Tennessee Titans hoped Cam Ward would quickly establish himself as their franchise quarterback, but his start hasn’t been smooth sailing.
However, Titans fans should have reason to believe Ward’s early struggles through his first 18 games can be turned around. Ward is tied for the second-worst 18-game start by a quarterback selected No. 1 overall since 1970, with a 3-15 record.
But that stat places him alongside current Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence and Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer QB Troy Aikman, while current Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young was worse at 2-16. Based on what all three of those QBs eventually became, that alone should give Ward
hope and be a reason to be patient with his development.
History gives Cam Ward reason for hope
The encouraging part for the Titans is what happened after those slow starts for the other three quarterbacks on that list. Aikman became a three-time Super Bowl champion and Hall of Famer, while finishing his career with a 94-71 record.
Lawrence led the Jaguars to an AFC South division title (at the Titans’ expense) and a playoff victory during his second season (2022), which began slowly. Now, he leads the NFL in passing touchdowns (4) after Week 1 and is following up a top-five MVP finish last season.
Young took an early-season benching in his second season that helped spark his turnaround heading into his now-fourth season. He is coming off leading the Panthers to their first playoff appearance since 2017 last season. Despite losing his Week 1 battle, he led the Panthers offense to 37 points and is top three in the NFL in passing yards (361) and touchdowns (3) heading into Week 2.
None of this guarantees Ward will follow the same path, as his development will depend on his play, the talent around him, and the Titans’ ability to build a functional offense. But the numbers prove that a bad start doesn’t automatically mean a bad career.
Ward has already shown flashes of the talent that made Tennessee comfortable selecting him No. 1 overall. If he can build on those moments and improve his consistency, there’s still plenty of time for his story to change.
