"The Tennessee Titans are on upset alert" is probably a sentence that hasn't been written in at least two seasons. However, with the Tennessee Titans entering Week 1 as slight favorites over the New York Jets, CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan believes that could be a dangerous spot for Tennessee.
In his list of five NFL teams on upset alert, he identified the Titans as a teamthat could stumble in its season opener. The Titans are currently favored by 1.5 points at home, which is essentially a pick 'em. Sullivan's main concern for the Titans? Cam Ward and the Titans' offensive showing during the preseason carrying over into the regular season.
Was the preseason really a mirage?
Sullivan's analysis views this as more of a bet against Cam Ward and the Titans' offense than a belief that
the Jets are destined for a breakout game. Despite positive reports from joint practices and training camp, the only tape the general public sees is the limited preseason game snaps.
Ward wasn't bad, but left a lot to be desired in his six preseason possessions leading the offense. Is that the end-all, be-all? Of course not. For one, it's fair to question if the Titans called plays meant to really show much of what they will unleash during the regular season.
Also, he will have the opportunity to play the full game during the regular season. That means a slow start can be reversed by a strong second half after halftime adjustments.
With a new offensive system under Brian Daboll in place and Robert Saleh making his debut as Titans head coach against the franchise he previously led, there is pressure for the team to produce. While it's fair to question all of the newness the Titans have, playing at home gives them an opportunity to work out the kinks more quickly and begin the season on a high note.
