A former second-round pick from Xavier, Derrick Brown played three NBA seasons, spending two and a half of those years with the Charlotte Bobcats. After being drafted with the No. 40 overall pick in 2009, Brown averaged 9.4 minutes per game over his 57 appearances as a rookie. After 41 games to begin his sophomore season, the Bobcats waived Brown, and he was later claimed by the New York Knicks.
Ironically, after his eight games in New York to finish the 2010-11 season, Charlotte wanted Brown back, signing him as a free agent. During his third season, he took advantage of increased playing time, averaging 8.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, one assist, 0.7 steals and 0.2 blocks in 22.2 minutes per game. Following the 2011-12 season, Brown would begin playing overseas,
which he did until the 2019-2020 season. He ended his career with the Bobcats, averaging 5.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 0.5 steals in 163 appearances.
