Former Illinois point guard Scott Haffner was selected in the second round of the 1989 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat with the No. 45 overall pick. Haffner played in 43 games for Miami during his rookie season, making six starts for the Heat. However, following his first NBA campaign, he was waived and later picked up by the Charlotte Hornets during the 1990-91 season.
Charlotte signed Haffner to a 10-day contract, giving him another shot at the NBA level. Throughout his time with the Hornets, Haffner appeared in seven games, averaging 2.4 points, 1.3 assists, 0.6 rebounds and 0.4 steals in 7.1 minutes per game. After his brief stint with Charlotte, Haffner played for the Quad City Thunder of the CBA (Continental Basketball Association).
