Theron Smith excelled during his college career at Ball State, averaging 16.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.4 blocks while shooting 37% from 3-point range. Although he went undrafted in the 2003 NBA Draft, Smith signed a two-year deal with the Memphis Grizzlies. The 6'8" forward played in just 20 games for Memphis before finding his way to the Charlotte Bobcats.

Charlotte selected Smith in the 2004 expansion draft along with Gerald Wallace, a future Bobcats All-Star, and 17 other players. However, after the selection, Smith played one season with the Bobcats, wearing the No. 0.
