The Charlotte Hornets selected Rex Chapman with the No. 8 overall pick in the 1988 NBA Draft, their first draft pick in franchise history. In his three and a half seasons (220 appearances) with the Hornets, Chapman was a reliable scorer, averaging 16.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.3 blocks. Chapman's strongest campaign with Charlotte came during the 1989-1990 season, when the former Kentuck Wildcat averaged 17.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 0.9 steals.
Chapman was later traded to the Washington Bullets for power forward Tom Hammonds. Chapman would go on to have a successful and underrated 12-year NBA career, averaging double-digits in points during every season except his final year, the 1999-2000 campaign. In
660-plus games for his career, Chapman averaged 14.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 0.9 steals while shooting 43% from the field and 35% from beyond the arc.
