During the 1999 NBA season, the Charlotte Hornets completed a deal with the Lakers, acquiring both Elden Campbell and Eddie Jones from Los Angeles in exchange for a package centered around Glen Rice. After the trade, Jones was dominant for the Hornets, making an All-Star appearance in his first full season with the team while finishing third in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
In 102 games with the Hornets, Jones averaged 19.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.8 steals and 0.8 blocks. Following the 1999-2000 season, Jones and the Hornets negotiated a sign and trade deal, sending him to the Miami Heat for a package headlined by Jamal Mashburn. Jones finished his NBA career after 14 seasons, having made three All-Star appearances, three All-Defensive
Teams, one steals title and one All-NBA selection. He averaged 14.8 points, four rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.6 blocks in 954 appearances.
