As one of the most revered shooting specialists in NBA history, Chip Engelland undoubtedly had many options to continue his career as an assistant coach.
So, in the 2026 offseason, why did the 65-year-old choose to work for head coach Ime Udoka with the Houston Rockets?
A strong financial offer by owner Tilman Fertitta was likely one reason, but it appears there was more to it.
In an interview with Varun Shankar of the Houston Chronicle, Engelland shed some light on his decision:
He praised Houston assistant coaches Ben Sullivan and Cam Hodges, who work with (Amen) Thompson and (Alperen) Şengün, respectively for their work, along with the rest of Udoka’s staff.
Engelland said he chose Houston as the latest stop in his career because they prioritized
development throughout the organization, with “everybody’s oars in the water going the same way.”

Engelland has worked as an NBA assistant coach since 1999, and he spent more than two decades (combined) with San Antonio and Oklahoma City, two of the league’s best franchises over that time. That run included a stint with championship teams in 2007 (Spurs), 2014 (Spurs), and 2025 (Thunder).
With that success in mind, Engelland clearly had options on the coaching market. Fortunately for the Rockets, who were sorely in need of shooting help, it appears Houston’s overall approach was enough to close the deal.
Udoka’s coaching staff has experienced minimal turnover during his years in Houston, which has allowed those coaches to have an extended working window with the team’s young players. Under the watch of general manager Rafael Stone, the Rockets have remained patient with the development of their recent first-round draft picks — namely Thompson, Sengun, Reed Sheppard, Jabari Smith Jr., and Tari Eason.
Shankar’s complete article on Engelland, who previously worked with Udoka as a player and fellow assistant during his San Antonio years, can be read here.
