The Cardinals were the worst team in the NFL in 1939. They went 1-10, losing their final eight games. They were held to 10 or fewer points nine times.
They had the league's worst offense, scoring only 7.6 points per game, and had the league's worst defense, giving up 23.1 per game. They scored 7 or fewer points in their final six games and were shut out three times.

The Cardinals had two NFL All-Stars:
- C Ki Aldrich
- WR Bill Smith
Aldrich was a rookie.
Jack Robbins was
their leading passer with 499 yards, four touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Frank Patrick passed for 291 yards, one touchdown and 13 interceptions.
Marshall Goldberg led the Cardinals with 152 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Smith caught 21 passes for 387 yards and four scores, leading the Cardinals in all three categories.
