The Arizona Cardinals have lost wide receiver Jalen Brooks for the rest of the season, as he suffered a wrist injury that requires surgery. He was placed on injured reserve. Instead of rolling with the receivers on the roster, they are turning to a familiar face.
According to Jordan Schultz, they are signing veteran receiver Zay Jones, who played for the Cardinals in 2024 and 2025. He was one of four receivers the Cardinals tried out on Tuesday.
Jones has been in the league since 2017 and, as Schultz notes, "brings with him over 300 career catches, nearly 3,300 yards receiving and 18 TDs."
However, he has not played more than 11 games in a season since 2022, and in 19 games over two seasons with the Cardinals, he had only 20 receptions for 267
yards.
Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur told reporters Monday that they would go with a committee of receivers to replace Brooks, who had been the starting 'X' receiver following the trade of Marvin Harrison Jr. Rookie Reggie Virgil and veteran Simi Fehoko could get more looks, but now the Cardinals are adding a veteran.
The Cardinals' most recent depth chart also suggests a role change for Michael Wilson. Instead of being the 'Z' receiver, Wilson is now listed as the starting 'X', with Kendrick Bourne now listed as the No. 1 'Z'.
The addition of Jones gives the Cardinals six wide receivers:
- Michael Wilson
- Kendrick Bourne
- Devin Duvernay
- Simi Fehoko
- Reggie Virgil
- Zay Jones
