We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Friday, August 28, is 16 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 16 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 2016 season for the Cardinals.
A look back at the 2016 season for the Cardinals
The 2016 season came with big expectations. They went 13-3 in 2015 and made it to the NFC Championship Game. They were featured in Prime Video's "All or Nothing," and head coach Bruce Arians established the expectation of winning the Super Bowl.
That didn't happen. They finished 7-8-1 and never were over .500. The first game set the tone, a 23-21 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football. Chandler Catanzaro missed a last-second
field goal that would have won the game over the Jimmy Garoppolo-led Patriots, who started the season without Tom Brady for four games because of the Deflategate scandal.
They had the No. 9 offense and No. 2 defense, but special teams killed them between missed field goals, blocked punts or kicks returned for scores or kickoff returns for touchdowns by their opponents.
2016 individual honors, leaders
The Cardinals had three Pro Bowlers:
- RB David Johnson
- WR Larry Fitzgerald
- CB Patrick Peterson
Johnson was also a first-team All-Pro and finished third in Offensive Player of the Year honors. Defensive lineman Calais Campbell did not make the Pro Bowl but was a second-team All-Pro.
Johnson rushed for 1,239 yards and had 80 receptions for 879 yards. He led the NFL in touches (373), total yards (2,118) and total touchdowns (20).
Carson Palmer passed for 4,233 yards, 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Fitzgerald led the NFL with 107 receptions and had 1,023 yards and six touchdowns.
Markus Golden had 12.5 sacks, and Chandler Jones, in his first season with the Cardinals, had 11.
Cornerback Marcus Cooper led the team with four interceptions and 11 pass breakups.
