The Arizona Cardinals, in the most unlikely fashion, snapped a number of losing streaks on Sunday. They defeated the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium 18-16 on a last-second field goal by kicker Chad Ryland.
It snapped their four-game losing streak this season.
It snapped an eight-game losing streak to NFC West opponents.
It snapped a three-game losing streak to the Rams.
For quarterback Jacoby Brissett, it snapped a skid of seven straight end-of-regulation or end-of-game drives where he failed to win the game. He has his first fourth-quarter comeback and first game-winning drive in 18 starts with Arizona.
And they did it without a touchdown.
Ryland made six field goals, accounting for all their points, including a 43-yarder as time expired, upsetting
the Rams.
The defense played a good full game. The Cardinals stopped the Rams on fourth down twice, had a takeaway and had five consecutive defensive series without allowing any points.
They never trailed by more than three, and they didn't trail in the second half.
They also benefited from fortunate calls at the end of the game. Colby Parkinson's touchdown was originally ruled down at the one, but the call was overturned, giving the Cardinals 47 seconds to move the ball. If the Rams had to run another play, the Cardinals might not have had time to get into field-goal range.
The Rams were called for a questionable unnecessary roughness penalty on Jalen Brooks' key 21-yard reception on the first play of the Cardinals' final drive, gifting Arizona 15 additional yards. Without that penalty, Ryland might have had to attempt a 58-yard kick.
But the Cardinals are now 2-4 and have the same record as the Rams.
They are 2-0 at SoFi Stadium.
And while there doesn't seem to be much hope for a good season, the noise that comes with struggles is quiet for at least a week.
