Quarterback Kyler Murray is no longer a member of the Arizona Cardinals, but a number of Cardinals fans will likely follow how he does with the Minnesota Vikings. There was big news from Vikings camp on Tuesday, as head coach Kevin O'Connell announced that Murray will be the team's starting quarterback.
Murray beat out former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy in the competition they had during the offseason and through the first couple of weeks of training camp.
The move was largely expected.
Murray only played in five games last season for the Cardinals, injuring his foot, getting placed on injured reserve and never returning. The Cardinals went 1-11 after that, losing their final nine games with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback, but the Cardinals decided
to move on from Murray after seven seasons. They released him, and he signed with Minnesota.
The Cardinals and Vikings will not face each other in the regular season.
Murray has the opportunity to prove himself and hopefully elevate a Vikings team that hopes to compete in a very tough NFC North.
Murray played seven seasons for the Cardinals after getting drafted first overall in 2019. He was Offensive Rookie of the Year and had two Pro Bowl seasons after that, leading the Cardinals to the playoffs in 2021. After that, things didn't get better. He tore his ACL in 2022 and, after that, he played well in 2024, only to have the team lose the division lead they had after Week 10 and lose five of their final seven and miss the postseason. He went 2-3 to start 2025 and then missed the remainder of the season.
