The Arizona Cardinals have a number of injury questions to answer over the next week and a half. One is with cornerback Garrett Williams, coming back from a torn Achilles he suffered in December.
He spent most of training camp on the PUP list but was activated in the week leading up to the preseason finale.
Will he be ready to play in Week 1?
Head coach Mike LaFleur said Williams is “progressing well,” whatever that means. “He's in good spirits. He loves ball. He loves being out there. So we're just kind of ramping up accordingly.”
Now, the way the Cardinals constructed their roster suggests they are counting on him being ready. They only have five cornerbacks on the roster. They cut Sean Murphy-Bunting, who was the first-team nickel corner all
offseason.
They have Kalen King on the practice squad, who also played nickelback in the preseason.
They are preparing for Williams to perhaps not play a full game, though. Denzel Burke has begun getting practice reps in the slot and LaFleur also mentioned safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson as an option, although he is coming back from a rib injury.
LaFleur is vague with his timelines, and Williams is only a little more than eight months post-injury, but all signs point toward a Week 1 return, whether that ends up being wise or not.
