The Arizona Cardinals take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday in Week 5 at State Farm Stadium. The two teams have played many times. This will be the 71st meeting between the two teams. The Lions have the lead all-time with a 36-28-6 record against the Cardinals.
There was a time when the Cardinals owned the Lions. That hasn't been in a while. The Lions now have been doing the owning.
The Cardinals haven't beaten the Lions since 2015, so it has been over a decade. At that point, it was the Cardinals' seventh consecutive win over the Lions. Since then, they have gone 0-5-1. The only non-loss was the 2019 season opener in quarterback Kyler Murray's NFL debut, when he rallied the Cardinals from an 18-point deficit to get to overtime, only to end in a tie.
The Cardinals beat the Lions 42-17 in 2015.
Here are the results since then:
- 2017, Lions 35, Cardinals 23: Matthew Stafford threw four touchdown passes for Detroit, and Carson Palmer threw three interceptions in Week 1. David Johnson suffered a season-ending wrist injury.
- 2018, Lions 17, Cardinals 3: Arizona's defense held the Lions to 218 yards, but the Cardinals only gained 279, and Josh Rosen was picked off once. The Cardinals didn't score until getting a fourth-quarter field goal.
- 2019, Cardinals 27, Lions 27: The Kyler Murray debut looked like a disaster. The Cardinals fell behind 24-6, but then Murray led an 18-point comeback with two fourth-quarter touchdown passes. They went to overtime and both teams kicked a field goal. Cardinals CB Tramaine Brock dropped a would-be interception he might have returned for a touchdown, or at least could have given the Cardinals a game-winning kick.
- 2020, Lions 26, Cardinals 23: Matthew Stafford had two touchdown passes for the Lions, and Kyler Murray was picked off three times.
- 2021, Lions 30, Cardinals 12: Jared Goff had three touchdown passes against the Cardinals and built a 24-6 lead.
- 2024, Lions 20, Cardinals 13: Goff had two touchdown passes, and the Lions outgained the Cardinals 373 to 277.
