After a week in which all four H-bomb underdogs either covered the spread or tied, we’ll see if that success can carry over for another week.
Both Jess Root and I won our H-bomb picks as Jess’s Tennessee Titans (+11.5) lost by only six points in a 24-18 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, and my pick of the Miami Dolphins (+10.5) lost 15-10 to the Minnesota Vikings.
There was one direct hit (outright win) in Week 4 when the New England Patriots (+6.5) upset the Buffalo Bills, 29-26. The one push occurred when the Seattle Seahawks (-7) defeated the L.A. Chargers, 30-23.
Meanwhile, Week 5 began with a direct hit as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+8) beat the Dallas Cowboys outright on the road 24-16.
After that game, only three others H-bomb eligible, with spreads
of at least 6.5 points.
Week 5 big underdog games
- Jacksonville Jaguars (-8) vs. Philadelphia Eagles in London
- Cincinnati Bengals (-7) on the road vs. Miami Dolphins
- Houston Texans (-7.5) on the road vs. Tennessee Titans
Jess is hoping to move over .500 for the season by dropping his bomb against the Jaguars, despite the Eagles being jolted by the retirement this week of longtime standout right tackle Lane Johnson.
The matchup of the Texans and Titans features two winless teams, but Tennessee is 2-0 this season as H-bomb underdogs. I will go with them to at least keep the game close.
H-bomb underdog standings
Direct hit record (outright win) in parentheses
- Howard: 3-1 (1)
- Jess 2-2: (0)
- Overall big underdogs: 12-6-1 (6)
