The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly finalized a trade with the Baltimore Ravens to send them quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who was benched in the third quarter of the Cardinals' 33-30 overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys and then pushed to the back of the depth chart on Monday.
Brissett will get to play in Baltimore, as the Ravens lost their top two quarterbacks — Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley — to injured reserve.
Compensation for the deal is not yet know, but the Cardinals did one thing that apparently had to happen before any deal was completed. They had to pay Brissett a chunk of what he is due the rest of the season.
Brissett signed a new contract in August that gave him a raise to $9.7 million in salary. According to ESPN's Field Yates,
the Cardinals are paying $2.7 million of the $5.4 million of his remaining salary as a bonus before the trade, leaving the Ravens to pay $2.43 million in salary the remainder of the season.
Such a move aids in facilitating the trade, and it likely means the Cardinals will get better compensation, as existing contracts do impact trade value.
The salary conversion will add $1.35 million in dead money to 2027. Brissett's contract voids on March 11, and that pushed $7.2 million in cap charges to 2027. Now, his dead cap value for 2027 will be $8.55 million.
