The injury to New York Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart has led to some interesting discussions about potential trades for quarterbacks. Might the Giants, who hope to compete in the NFC East with John Harbaugh as their head coach, try to acquire a quarterback?
ESPN's Adam Schefter connected some dots and pointed to the Arizona Cardinals as a potential trade partner.
Could the Cardinals trade backup quarterback Gardner Minshew to the Giants?
"There are some interesting candidates out there," Schefter said on "Get Up" this week. "Gardner Minshew is in Arizona. The Cardinals have Jacoby Brissett, they have Carson Beck. And Gardner Minshew played for Matt Nagy in Kansas City. Matt Nagy is now the Giants offensive coordinator and Gardner Minshew also
beat John Harbaugh in Baltimore twice."
Now, the Cardinals and Giants play in Week 4. Surely the Cardinals wouldn't make any such deal until facing them next week.
It is an interesting thought. The Cardinals want to develop Beck, and having him prepare to be the No. 2 might help that. However, they are operating under the expectation of competing, so having someone like Minshew behind Jacoby Brissett makes more sense.
And teams don't just trade away QB depth midseason unless the year has gone awry, which hasn't happened for anyone after only two weeks.
However, Minshew is only under contract for this season. Beck was drafted with an eye on the future, and many would like to see him get playing time this season, so the Cardinals know whether or not they need to address the position with a high draft pick or not.
Also, the Giants probably want to see whether current starter Jameis Winston can lead the team to wins before making a significant move.
Should they do it? Well, that depends on what happens over the next few weeks. If they end up 1-6, 2-7, why not? They wouldn't need Minshew to remain competitive. They could get draft capital for him and get a look at Beck late in the season.
But until the season is out of reach, I wouldn't expect.
