It is official. The Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans finalized and announced their trade involving wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. The Cardinals sent Harrison and a 2027 sixth-round pick to Houston for a 2027 second-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick.
It was a surprise deal, considering what the team had said previously, but considering his usage and production, it makes some sense.
Some within the organization spoke about the trade.
Head coach Mike LaFleur was asked about it after the Cardinals lost 45-21 on Sunday to the Detroit Lions.
Why did they make the deal? "I just thought it was in the best interest of this club," he said. He declined to explain when the decision was made to deal him, though.
LaFleur spoke positively about Harrison,
but he also took some responsibility for not being able to unlock Harrison's potential.
"I really like Marvin Harrison," he said. "He's a good person. I wish him well. We did what we thought was in the best interest of the Cardinals. Any guy that does not play to the level that I feel like they're capable of, I'm always going to put that on me and coaching in general."
General manager Monti Ossenfort had a statement in the trade announcement.
“Decisions like this are never easy,” he said in the statement. “Ultimately, we have to do what is best for our football team and that will always be the driving factor. We are extremely grateful to Marvin for what he has contributed to our organization and wish him the very best as he moves forward in his career.”
Quarterback Jacoby Brissett spoke about the player impact.
“It's tough," he said postgame. "It's a person that we all have a relationship with outside of football. As much as everybody can say, ‘it's a business, it’s a business,’ that doesn't make it easy. That makes it the toughest because it is a part of the business. It's somebody that I know I'll miss and that a lot of guys in that locker room will miss. I'm sure a lot of us are rooting for ‘Marv.’”
