A look back at the 1940 season for the Cardinals
The Cardinals were a last-place team in 1940. They didn't lose their first three games, but went 1-0-2, but lost seven of their last eight games to go 2-7-2.
They averaged 12.6 points per game, which was sixth in the 10-team league. They allowed 20.2 points per game, the worst scoring defense in the NFL.
They were held under 10 points in five games.
1940 individual honors, leaders
Rookie receiver John Shirk was the only Cardinals All-Star in 1940.
Hugh McCullough was the Cardinals'
leading passer that season. He passed for 529 yards, four touchdowns, and threw a league-leading 21 interceptions. He also rushed for 278 yards and a team-high three touchdowns.
Marshall Goldberg was their leading rusher with 325 yards, scoring twice.
Shirk had 11 catches for 91 yards, but the team's leading receiver was Gaynell Tinsley with 16 receptions for 165 yards.
McCullough also had the most defensive interceptions with five.
