Former Arizona Cardinals running back Emari Demercado has been reunited with one of the Cardinals' former coaches. He did not survive final cuts with the Kansas City Chiefs, with whom he signed as a free agent this offseason, but he was claimed off waivers by the Dallas Cowboys.
Demercado is now reunited with Klayton Adams, the Cowboys' offensive coordinator, who was the Cardinals' offensive line coach in 2023-2024.
Demercado is the No. 3 back on the Cowboys' roster now, behind Javonte Williams and Malik Davis. It is a familiar role for Demercado, who spent most of his three seasons on the Cardinals from 2023-2025 as a No. 3 back, playing mostly on third downs and in passing situations.
Demercado was a restricted free agent, and the Cardinals opted
to not tender him, making him an unrestricted free agent.
In three years with the Cardinals, he rushed for 819 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 6.5 yards per attempt, and he had 50 receptions for 324 yards and a touchdown.
His time with the Cardinals will sadly be most remembered for his mistake against the Tennessee Titans, when he let the ball go before the goalline in what should have been a 72-yard touchdown run. It was ruled a fumble that went to the Titans, and that ended up being the deciding play of a 22-21 last-second loss.
He returns to Texas, where he played collegiately at TCU. The Cardinals play the Cowboys on the road in Week 8.
