We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Friday, August 21, is 23 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 23 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 2023 season for the Cardinals.
A look back at the 2023 season for the Cardinals
In 2023, the Cardinals had a new head coach in Jonathan Gannon. They started the season without quarterback Kyler Murray, who tore his ACL in November 2022. Josh Dobbs began the season as the starting quarterback after they acquired via trade after the preseason.
They went 1-8 before Murray returned and then Dobbs was traded away to the Minnesota Vikings. They went 3-5 the rest of the way, finishing the season 4-13, although they were a competitive
team almost every game. They were a good bad team.
2023 individual honors, leaders
Safety Budda Baker was the Cardinals' lone Pro Bowler.
In eight games upon returning, Murray passed for 1,799 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also had three rushing touchdowns.
James Conner was their leading rusher. He had a career-high 1,040 yards in 13 games and scored seven touchdowns.
Tight end Trey McBride led the team with 81 receptions for 825 yards and three touchdowns. He set the single-season franchise record for receptions by a tight end, a mark he would break in 2024 and again in 2025.
Dennis Gardeck led the team with six sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Safety Jalen Thompson's four interceptions led the team. Cornerback Antonio Hamilton's 11 pass breakups were tops on the team.
