One reason for Arizona Cardinals fans to tune in to their preseason game Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders has disappeared. After an impressive performance in the Hall of Fame Game last week, rookie quarterback Carson Beck will not play against the Raiders, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Beck is dealing with a rib injury, sustained in the Hall of Fame Game. While he didn't miss any reps in training camp, practicing through soreness, the team has opted to let him heal. The injury is not considered serious.
That means more work for No. 2 quarterback Gardner Minshew and No. 4 quarterback Kedon Slovis.
Starter Jacoby Brissett is expected to play, but it might be a couple of offensive series. Minshew didn't play in the Hall of Fame
Game.
It is a curious move, for sure.
Those who saw him practice didn't note any wincing or working with trainers. There was no word of an injury. To say it was something he sustained in the game last week when he didn't take a hit. So the supposed injury had to come on a run or a throw.
This slows the momentum created from his first-half performance last week and quashes any potential on-field matchup between him and Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner.
The Cardinals and Raiders kick off from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas at 8 p.m. (5 p.m. Arizona time).
