The Arizona Cardinals will catch a break next week in their home opener. They will take on the Seattle Seahawks at State Farm Stadium, but it is likely that Seahawks starting quarterback Sam Darnold will be unable to play.
Darnold suffered a hip injury on Wednesday against the New England Patriots in the first quarter and did not return. Initial tests gave good news, as he did not suffer a fracture.
After further testing, according to head coach Mike Macdonald, Darnold got "really, really good news" about the injury, although he will almost certainly miss Week 2.
Reporter Tom Pelissero shared that Darnold suffered "an unusual muscle strain in his hip area." His return is to be determined, but injured reserve is not being considered yet, suggesting
that the timeline should be less than a month for his return.
But when it comes to the Cardinals' game against the Seahawks next week, it means they will go against Seahawks backup quarterback Drew Lock. Lock finished the game against the Patriots, leading them to a 13-10 win, coming back from a 10-0 deficit. He passed for 187 yards and a touchdown.
Lock hasn't started a game since 2024, when he went 1-4 in five starts for the New York Giants. He is 10-18 in 28 career starts.
Lock has never throw a pass against the Cardinals in his career.
