The Arizona Cardinals activated cornerback Garrett Williams from the PUP (physically unable to perform) list, allowing him to begin practicing. After tearing his Achilles in December, he hopes to be able to play in Week 1.
That move left two players on PUP. One is tight end Tip Reiman, and the other is linebacker Josh Sweat.
What is the latest with Reiman?
Back in the spring, head coach Mike LaFleur indicated that he expected everyone who was injured except for Williams to be ready for training camp.
That was not the case for Reiman, and he isn't going to be ready to play in Week 1.
How close is he?
"It's hard to tell," LaFleur said on Thursday. "It's just day to day. He's putting in a ton of work, as well, so that's just day to day."
He broke his
ankle last season in a gruesome injury. His size (he is 6-5 and 271 pounds) doesn't make it easy, either.
It will lead to a tough decision in the days leading up to the roster cutdown date on Aug. 30. Moving him to the regular-season PUP reserve means he can't practice for at least two weeks and cannot be activated until at least Week 5. However, it would mean saving a roster spot for another player initially.
"Those are the tough decisions, and you lean on the player to speak truth as well," he said. "And we trust these guys. He's made of all the right stuff, so Tip's going to keep it real with us."
If he is activated and kept on the roster, then the Cardinals will need to carry a fourth tight end, at least initially.
