We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Sunday, September 6, is seven days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With seven days until Week 1, let's look back at the 2007 season for the Cardinals.
A look back at the 2007 season for the Cardinals
In 2007, the Cardinals had a new head coach in Ken Whisenhunt. They had a young quarterback in Matt Leinart they hoped was going to be their franchise guy. However, he fractured his collarbone after five games and missed the rest of the season.
With veteran Kurt Warner on the team, Whisenhunt gave him a role early before Leinart's injury. Warner would come in for two-minute offensive situations.
After Leinart's injury, Warner showed
he still had something in the tank. He also got hurt but managed to play still with a big elbow brace for his left arm.
The Cardinals started 3-2, lost three in a row to go to 3-5 and then won five of their final eight games to finish 8-8, setting the stage for a quarterback competition in 2008 that Warner would win.
2007 individual honors, leaders
The Cardinals had two Pro Bowlers in 2007:
- WR Larry Fitzgerald
- DT Darnell Dockett
Warner started 11 games and led the team in passing with 3,417 yards, 27 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.
Edgerrin James was the workhorse at running back, rushing for 1,222 yards and seven touchdowns.
Fitzgerald had 100 receptions for 1,409 yards and 10 scores.
Defensively, linebackers Calvin Pace and Karlos Dansby each had 99 tackles, and linebacker Gerald Hayes had 98. Dockett led the team with nine sacks. Pace had 6.5. Antrel Rolle had five interceptions and returned three of them for touchdowns. Rod Hood also had five picks and broke up a league-leading 21 passes.
