The Spartans have scuffled in recent seasons and hope that they can find some stability after hiring Pat Fitzgerald away from Northwestern. It's going to be one of the more interesting storylines in the Big Ten this season, if not in all of college football.
On the other side, Toledo has been consistently competitive for several years and they're hoping to take the next step under first-year head coach Mike Jacobs. Jacobs has an impressiveresume at lower levels of college football but is looking to prove that he can cut it in the MAC.

unknown factor that could make this game hard to predict. The Rockets are moving forward with John Alan Richter under center, who spent the first four years of his college career at Toledo waiting his turn.
The Spartans are rolling with Alessio Milivojevic, who played nine games last season. Milivojevic threw 10 touchdowns and three interceptions a season ago, and it'll be interesting to see if Fitzgerald leans on him more this season.
With so many new components for both teams, expect a feeling-out process for the first quarter of the game as the programs figure out what can work for them. This should be a one-score game heading into the fourth quarter, with either program having a chance to steal the matchup late.
